Treatment of mood disorders such as anxiety, depression, and bi-polar disorder is a comprehensive process. We don't treat the diagnosis but rather work with the individual to find effective ways to reduce and manage the symptoms that are causing distress. The cause of the distressing symptoms is typically multifaceted because people are complicated. To effectively treat mood disorders, we have to focus on the whole person taking into consideration biological, social and even spiritual needs. Life circumstances, especially in today's world, can cause debilitating distress and can cause one to question their purpose. Understanding your specific needs, strengths, and preferences will help to develop treatment interventions that are unique to you, moving you beyond symptoms, to regain a sense of purpose and return to living .
Some examples of treatment interventions may include challenging negative thoughts/beliefs, increasing mindfulness, accepting that "negative emotions" are part of life and do not need to be avoided, processing negative beliefs about self (negative cognitions), stress management skills and learning skills for emotion regulation.
A holistic approach will include focus on self-care, such as sleep routine, exercise, nutrition, time reconnecting with nature, and engagement in activities that are meaningful. Spirituality will also be incorporated for those who have or long for a connection to something greater than themselves.
